Berti Vogts fielded an adventurous team with three forwards in a match which Scotland were determined to take at least a point. In the end however a spirited performance was not enough and few would complain that the better team won. Germany were not impressive in the early stages but just as it looked Scotland were starting to take control the home team took the lead. Kuranyi was first to react to a Douglas save and his return cross was knocked in by Bobic after 25 minutes. At half time Scotland captain Paul Lambert had to come off with an ankle injury and his replacement Maurice Ross was to make a major impact. First however Germany doubled their lead in 50 minutes as Steven Pressley brought down Bobic in the box and Ballack scored from the spot. Ross was cautioned for a foul on Rau then helped to set up a goal for Scotland which had until then looked unlikely. His interception in midfield set up Stevie Thompson and his cut back was fired into the net by Neil McCann. Hopes of a Scotland comeback were dashed after Ross made another challenge on Rau and his second yellow card made him the first Scotland player to be sent off in four years. With ten men there was little prospect of Scotland breaking down the German defence and the home team had little difficulty in finishing on top. With torrential rain it was a difficult night for good football but the Scots gave a good account of themselves and showed how the team had progressed under Berti Vogts.
