The match turned on two incidents. After half an hour a McFadden corner was knocked goalwards by Richard Hughes but was stopped on the goalline by a Norwegian defender. Despite strong Scottish claims for a goal the referee waved play on and television evidence did not provide conclusive proof either way. In the second half at the same goal a Norwegian header from a corner was kept out of goal by James McFadden using his hand and not only did he receive a red card for his trouble but Steffen Iversen scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. This was in 53 minutes and Scotland never looked like getting back on level terms.
